From the book chapter: An Evolutionary Crisis<\/em><\/p>\n

The third famous spiritual teacher who perceived humankind\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>ongoing spiritual evolution came from the Western world. Pierre Teilhard\u00a0<\/span>de Chardin (1881\u20131955) was a French scientist, philosopher, and Jesuit\u00a0<\/span>priest. His study and work as a paleontologist and geologist led him to\u00a0<\/span>reflect on the evolutionary process of the universe, from primordial\u00a0<\/span>particles to the development of life and human beings, from the geosphere\u00a0<\/span>to the biosphere, and finally what he called the \u201cnoosphere,\u201d \u201cthe sphere of\u00a0<\/span>human thought.\u201d Inspired by French philosopher Henri Bergson\u2019s view on\u00a0<\/span>\u201ccreative evolution,\u201d Teilhard de Chardin perceived in the evolutionary\u00a0<\/span>process a clear direction toward an ever-increasing level of material\u00a0<\/span>complexity and consciousness: \u201cEvolution is an ascent [of matter] toward\u00a0<\/span>consciousness.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Teilhard de Chardin thought evolution was bound to achieve a supreme\u00a0<\/span>consciousness, which he called the \u201comega point,\u201d which was \u201cpulling\u201d all\u00a0<\/span>creation toward it. This would be achieved by the future of humankind,\u00a0<\/span>that would realize its psychic unity, a process he termed \u201cunanimization.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Teilhard de Chardin wrote that he first had the vision of the \u201cnoosphere,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>which he considered \u201cEarth\u2019s own soul,\u201d during World War I, in the\u00a0<\/span>trench warfare from Yser to Verdun, where he spent months serving as a\u00a0<\/span>stretcher bearer. In this extreme physical, psychic, and energetic density,\u00a0<\/span>where a million men were fighting each other, he started to perceive an\u00a0<\/span>evolutionary process, not at all distinct but rather of the same kind of\u00a0<\/span>physical matter\u2019s evolution he had studied. He proclaimed:<\/span><\/p>\n

A new Faith, in which the ascensional Faith that rises up towards\u00a0<\/span>a transcendent, and the propulsive Faith that drives towards an\u00a0<\/span>Immanent, for a single compound \u2013 a new Charity in which all the\u00a0<\/span>Earth\u2019s dynamic passions combine as they are divinized: it is this,\u00a0<\/span>I now see with a vision that will never leave me, that the World is\u00a0<\/span>desperately in need of at this very moment, if it is not to collapse.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Teilhard de Chardin\u2019s work, which has had a profound impact among\u00a0<\/span>scientific and spiritual communities, was first condemned by the Catholic\u00a0<\/span>Church before being finally rehabilitated with great recognition by\u00a0<\/span>leading figures such as Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
