From the book chapter:\u00a0An Evolutive Crisis<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Baha\u2019u\u2019llah\u2014\u201cthe glory of God\u201d in Arabic\u2014 was born in\u00a0<\/span>1817 in Persia. He was the founder of the Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed faith, which is estimated\u00a0<\/span>nowadays to have between five and eight million adherents spread\u00a0<\/span>throughout the world. He was a follower of Siyyid M\u00edrz\u00e1 `Al\u00ed-Muhammad,\u00a0<\/span>a young man who, in 1844, claimed to be the promised redeemer of Islam,\u00a0<\/span>the long-awaited Imam Mahdi in Shia Islam, and called himself the B\u00e1b\u00a0<\/span>(\u201cthe gate\u201d). The B\u00e1b took that name as he announced the imminent\u00a0<\/span>coming of \u201che whom God will make manifest.\u201d Together with thousands\u00a0<\/span>of followers, he was severely repressed and finally killed in 1850.<\/span><\/p>\n

As one of the B\u00e1b\u2019s followers, Baha\u2019u\u2019llah was imprisoned in an\u00a0<\/span>underground dungeon of Tehran in 1853, where he had a vision of a\u00a0<\/span>maiden from God, who announced his mission as a messenger of God, the\u00a0<\/span>one whose coming the B\u00e1b had prophesied. Baha\u2019u\u2019llah was soon released\u00a0<\/span>from jail but continued to live his life in exile in the Middle East, most\u00a0<\/span>often under surveillance or jailed again by the Ottoman authorities. Before\u00a0<\/span>his death in 1892 near Acre\u2014now part of Israel\u2014he left an abundant body\u00a0<\/span>of works, which established a solid foundation for a new religion.\u00a0<\/span>After Abraham, Krishna, Zoroaster, Moses, Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad,\u00a0<\/span>and others, Baha\u2019u\u2019llah stated that he was the last Manifestation of\u00a0<\/span>God for this age, whose mission was to unite the human race so that a\u00a0<\/span>thriving planetary civilization could be established, a new world order\u00a0<\/span>whose institutions would embody Bah\u00e1\u2019is\u2019 ideals of unity and justice for\u00a0<\/span>all. Baha\u2019u\u2019llah considered justice the main condition for the unity of\u00a0<\/span>humankind, without which its \u201cwell-being [ … ], peace and security, are\u00a0<\/span>unattainable.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not for him to pride himself who loveth his own\u00a0<\/span>country, but rather for him who loveth the whole world. The Earth is but\u00a0<\/span>one country, and mankind its citizens,\u201d he proclaimed. He taught that\u00a0<\/span>religious truth is progressively revealed by God through a series of divine\u00a0<\/span>messengers, whose teachings are tailored to suit the needs of the time and\u00a0<\/span>place of their appearance, for the progress and advancement of human\u00a0<\/span>morals and civilization.<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, Bah\u00e1\u2019i scriptures consider religion to have \u201cbeen the basis of\u00a0<\/span>all civilization and progress in the history of mankind.\u201d This view of a\u00a0<\/span>\u201cprogressive revelation\u201d and oneness of all religions is summarized by\u00a0<\/span>\u201cShogi Effendi, who was the head of the Bah\u00e1\u2019i faith from 1921 to 1957:\u00a0<\/span>The fundamental principle enunciated by Baha\u2019u\u2019llah, the followers\u00a0<\/span>of His Faith firmly believe, is that religious truth is not absolute but\u00a0<\/span>relative, that Divine Revelation is a continuous and progressive\u00a0<\/span>process, that all the great religions of the world are divine in origin,\u00a0<\/span>that their basic principles are in complete harmony, that their aims\u00a0<\/span>and purposes are one and the same, that their teachings are but facets\u00a0<\/span>of one truth, that their functions are complementary, that they differ\u00a0<\/span>only in the nonessential aspects of their doctrines, and that their\u00a0<\/span>missions represent successive stages in the spiritual evolution of\u00a0<\/span>human society\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

These different stages of evolution are considered to be analogous to\u00a0<\/span>those of an individual\u2019s life, our current stage being adolescence, which\u00a0<\/span>precedes full maturity. As Shogi Effendi put it:\u00a0<\/span>\u201cThe long ages of infancy and childhood, through which the human\u00a0<\/span>race had to pass, have receded into the background. Humanity is\u00a0<\/span>now experiencing the commotions invariably associated with the\u00a0<\/span>most turbulent stage of its evolution, the stage of adolescence, when\u00a0<\/span>the impetuosity of youth and its vehemence reach their climax, and\u00a0<\/span>must gradually be superseded by the calmness, the wisdom, and\u00a0<\/span>the maturity that characterizes the stage of manhood. Then will\u00a0<\/span>the human race reach that stature of ripeness which will enable it\u00a0<\/span>to acquire all the powers and capacities upon which its ultimate\u00a0<\/span>development must depend\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

In their book on the Bah\u00e1\u2019i faith, Hatcher and Martin explain:\u00a0<\/span>\u201cBaha\u2019u\u2019llah envisioned the establishment of a World Order as\u00a0<\/span>occurring in three successive stages. The first stage is a period of\u00a0<\/span>social breakdown and widespread suffering, suffering greater in\u00a0<\/span>scope and intensity than any previously known. Bah\u00e1\u2019is believe\u00a0<\/span>that this first stage is already well advanced and that the turmoil\u00a0<\/span>presently afflicting the world will, in time, test every human life\u00a0<\/span>and all existing social institutions […] According to Bah\u00e1\u2019i belief,\u00a0<\/span>the present period of suffering and difficulties will culminate in a\u00a0<\/span>worldwide spiritual, physical and social convulsion.\u00a0<\/span>This crisis will lead to the establishment of the \u201cLesser Peace,\u201d in\u00a0<\/span>which some of the institutions of this new world order will be established\u00a0<\/span>to guarantee political peace. It will be the prelude to the third stage of\u00a0<\/span>establishment of the new world order, the \u201cMost Great Peace,\u201d that will\u00a0<\/span>come about far more gradually to establish \u201cthe Kingdom of God on earth,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>the \u201ccoming of age of the entire human race\u201d based on the conscious\u00a0<\/span>recognition and application of the teachings of Baha\u2019u\u2019llah.<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, the works of Baha\u2019u\u2019llah include many teachings related to this\u00a0<\/span>new world order that is based on spiritual principles, in particular the\u00a0<\/span>oneness of humanity. It will necessitate and allow a major restructuring\u00a0<\/span>of political, social, and economic institutions based on an intense dialogue\u00a0<\/span>between science and religion, the two systems of knowledge available to\u00a0<\/span>humankind. Among his priorities, Baha\u2019u\u2019llah emphasized science and\u00a0<\/span>religion, the equality of men and women, universal education, economic\u00a0<\/span>justice, cultural diversity, and an auxiliary international language, as well as\u00a0<\/span>institutions of international governance: a world government, parliament,\u00a0<\/span>code of law, tribunal, police, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
