From the book chapter: An Evolutive Crisis<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The general belief in humankind\u2019s capacity to evolve spiritually has been most\u00a0<\/span>prominently emphasized by some spiritual teachers across different traditions. While some readers might think that these\u00a0<\/span>spiritual teachings can take us away from a rational, grounded, and\u00a0<\/span>practical political thought that this book intends to develop, I offer them as\u00a0<\/span>deeper perspectives, in which this reflection can\u2014but does not necessarily\u00a0<\/span>need to\u2014be embedded.<\/span><\/p>\n

The belief in humankind\u2019s spiritual evolution is inherent to many\u00a0<\/span>spiritual traditions, for example those with cyclic cosmologies or others\u00a0<\/span>believing in reincarnation and the existence of the divine within living\u00a0<\/span>beings, that we can, life after life, learn to manifest more fully. These include\u00a0<\/span>many traditional cultures and religions, such as Buddhism, Jainism, and\u00a0<\/span>Hinduism. Many interpretations of the latter seem to agree that we are\u00a0<\/span>moving out of the \u201ckali yuga,\u201d the \u201cage of quarrel and strife.\u201d The faith\u00a0<\/span>in the upcoming unification and progress of humanity is also present\u00a0<\/span>in numerous indigenous prophecies. The indigenous people\u2019s track at Politics of Being\u00a0<\/span>the 2018 Parliament of the World\u2019s Religions was titled: \u201cThe Spiritual\u00a0<\/span>Evolution of Humanity & Healing Our Mother Earth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Most religions also have an eschatological dimension: they are\u00a0<\/span>concerned with the destiny of humanity, which, after many crises, is said to\u00a0<\/span>be ultimately radiant. For instance, this is illustrated in Christian concepts\u00a0<\/span>such as the \u201ckingdom of God\u201d\u2014which is generally considered to be the\u00a0<\/span>central theme of Jesus\u2019s teaching, and, according to some interpretations,\u00a0<\/span>means the earthly fulfillment of God\u2019s will\u2014or the \u201cnew Earth.\u201d In the\u00a0<\/span>last two centuries, three spiritual teachers from different traditions have\u00a0<\/span>been particularly prominent in proclaiming not only humankind\u2019s destiny\u00a0<\/span>toward spiritual fulfillment, but its upcoming realization\u00a0<\/span>[…]\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Aurobindo, Teilhard de Chardin, and many others have shaped a\u00a0<\/span>spiritual vision of evolution that honors the current scientific knowledge\u00a0<\/span>while transcending its materialistic paradigm. According to this vision,\u00a0<\/span>it is the spirit in nature that springs higher orders of complexity,\u00a0<\/span>consciousness, and freedom. While evolution has unfolded unconsciously\u00a0<\/span>during billions of years, we can now start to understand the nature,\u00a0<\/span>direction, and patterns of evolution. […] We can align ourselves\u00a0<\/span>with this universal intelligence at work and tap into our great scientific,\u00a0<\/span>spiritual, and social knowledge to cocreate the next stages of our evolution.<\/span><\/p>\n
