\u201cThe many scientifically demonstrated\u00a0<\/span>effects of meditation inform us of the changes in attitudes and behaviors\u00a0<\/span>inner development can help promote (see chapter 9). We may also consider\u00a0<\/span>the testimonies of the most spiritually advanced people that have walked\u00a0<\/span>this earth to clearly understand the direction that spiritual development\u00a0<\/span>entails. In fact, according to Wayne Teasdale (1945\u20132004), an American\u00a0<\/span>Catholic monk, the great mystics of all spiritual traditions have basically\u00a0<\/span>shared a common divine experience: that of unity or oneness with\u00a0<\/span>all that is.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOnly by admitting and realizing our unity with others can we entirely\u00a0<\/span>fulfill our true self-being,\u201d said Sri Aurobindo. This can be conceptualized\u00a0<\/span>differently, such as through the Buddhist conception of \u201cinterbeing,\u201d but\u00a0<\/span>these traditions all express a dissolution of the distinction between self\u00a0<\/span>and others (in other words, \u201cego\u201d), which naturally leads to the highest\u00a0<\/span>purpose: that of service. While only exceptional individuals are able to\u00a0<\/span>undergo this full transformation, it can certainly inform us about our\u00a0<\/span>nature. A<\/span>s we come closer in touch with our true selves, we tend to\u00a0express our nature of interbeing or, more simply, our relational nature:\u00a0we also get closer to and take more care of other human and nonhuman beings. We naturally develop pro-social behaviors and a sense of service\u00a0<\/span>(chapter 6).<\/span><\/p>\n

This path of inner development leads us to nourish three essential\u00a0<\/span>connections: to ourselves, to other human beings, and to nonhuman\u00a0<\/span>beings. As they reflect our true nature, these connections tend to develop\u00a0<\/span>together, each one leading to the others. As more mature human beings,\u00a0<\/span>we are becoming more aware of our true needs, which are, to a large extent,\u00a0<\/span>relational. This tends to lead us to take more care of our partners, family,\u00a0<\/span>and friends, and maybe even reconcile ourselves with a brother or cousin\u00a0<\/span>we have not seen for a while. We grow aware of the many benefits and\u00a0<\/span>wisdoms that nature offers us freely, and become more sensitized to the\u00a0<\/span>need to protect it. We learn to take care of ourselves; we become happier\u00a0<\/span>and feel better, often while consuming less and finding more time for\u00a0<\/span>what really counts. We may decide to change our job for one that is more\u00a0<\/span>meaningful to us and which is in line with our values, to make our own\u00a0<\/span>little contribution to a better world.<\/span><\/p>\n

As we grow wiser, we develop the ability to see things as they are, to\u00a0<\/span>make better and more conscious decisions that can help translate our care\u00a0<\/span>for one another and the Earth into effective actions. We also become more\u00a0<\/span>creative and open to change, more resilient. Of course, on our path, we\u00a0<\/span>tend to be more in touch with our own suffering and that of others, but we\u00a0<\/span>realize these knots and tensions have always been there, and we can learn\u00a0<\/span>and develop the confidence to transform them.”<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
