Hence we have lost our ways in the blind pursuit of economic\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and technological development as ends in themselves. We need wisdom\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to guide our nations, and the role of knowledge is to validate or reject\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(as erroneous applications or interpretations), specify, and operationalize\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wisdom\u2019s general orientations. This wisdom is to be found in the traditions\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that cultivated it over centuries and millennia\u2014allowing it to impregnate\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our cultures, an essential condition for its legitimate and effective use\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nowadays\u2014and updated to our current realities through the scientific lens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vision I outline is largely inspired by the many wisdom traditions\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that have flourished everywhere on this Earth throughout history. Beyond\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what are often called spiritual and religious traditions, there are also\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">philosophical traditions, especially those which have remained faithful\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to their etymology, the \u201clove of wisdom,\u201d and are thus, according to the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">definition I propose, \u201cspiritual traditions,\u201d a term I will often use in this\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">book. Unfortunately, due to the course Western philosophy has taken, this\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is often no longer the case in the West, which is deeply connected to the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">current spiritual crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In ancient Greece, philosophy was born as an art of living, a way of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being, an effort of inner transformation that relied on spiritual exercises.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philosophical discourse was only a part of it. Anyone on the path of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-improvement or self-realization was a philosopher. All ancient\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">philosophical schools warned against the natural tendency to get caught\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up in philosophical discourse, thus forgoing philosophy as a way of life.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greco-Roman philosophy was eventually absorbed by Christianity and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shaped the Christian spiritual life, providing concrete exercises, models,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and vocabulary. Christianity took over the spiritual role of philosophy\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and let what was then called \u201cphilosophy\u201d become a mere theoretical,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intellectual exercise, providing a conceptual basis for theology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the Middle Ages, \u201cphilosophy\u201d progressively regained its\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">autonomy over religion, inheriting many of the medieval features of abstract\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">theology. Nowadays, philosophy is generally considered an art of thinking,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concerned more with concepts and words than with discovering the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">essential laws and truth of our lives, and taught by university professors \u2014\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the only ones with a claim to the title of \u201cphilosopher.\u201d Moreover, contrary\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the Middle Ages, philosophy\u2019s lack of a spiritual dimension is often no\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">longer balanced by religion nowadays. Spirituality has been confused with\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">religion and somehow rejected by Western philosophy and modernity,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">something that has had important consequences on the evolution of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While religions have sometimes been used to divide humanity, true\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spirituality brings people together. I have come to the conclusion that all\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spiritual traditions share a common wisdom, whose different colors and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forms ultimately enrich our common humanity. My own limited experience\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has drawn me closer to some of them, particularly that of my own teacher,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, which to a greater extent enlightens this\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">book. This Earth wisdom, that can emerge from the discussion between\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different spiritual traditions, provides the basis, through a continuous\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dialogue with science and history, for the development of the politics of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spiritual traditions are humankind\u2019s most valuable common heritage,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">able to offer a profound understanding of human nature, as well as practical\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">knowledge and tools for inner, and ultimately social, development. In\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fact, spiritual wisdom is not only relevant to our inner lives but can be\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">applied to all areas of life, in everything we do, as spiritual teachers often\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">embody. As societies reflect the psychological, emotional, and spiritual\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patterns and challenges of the individuals they are composed of, they, like\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">individuals, can benefit from spiritual understanding and guidance. No\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">individual can truly thrive without looking inward. The same is true for\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Societies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This reflection is also informed by science. Throughout this book, I\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will also cover recent developments in many fields of human science,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in particular political science, economics, sociology, anthropology,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psychology, biology, and development studies, with endnotes and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">references for readers who want to go deeper. I refer to a wide range of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">countries as examples, with some emphasis on France, my own country,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the United States, on which a wealth of data is available to document\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our views. The US is probably the country that has fallen farthest into\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the old materialistic and individualistic paradigm\u2014what can be called\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the \u201cstory of separation\u201d (see chapter 2) and the emphasis on economic\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">development. Hence, the US exemplifies the troubles associated with this\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approach and the need to transition to the new paradigm of being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I first thought about writing this book as a pure, objective, and science-based\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proposal like the ones I write for UN agencies or governments, and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this book can provide the basis for that. However, I realized something\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fundamental would be missing. I reclaim it by interweaving science and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spirituality, inspiration and hard facts, theory and practice, including\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">those from my personal experience. We cannot divide ourselves, mind\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and heart, when addressing the subject of human evolution. Wisdom,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deep understanding, and intelligence do not arise from our thinking mind\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alone. Still, it needs to relate to our existing body of scientific knowledge,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which provides a common ground for any relevant discussion beyond\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">narrow spiritual circles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vision I outline is largely inspired by the many wisdom traditions that have flourished everywhere on this Earth throughout history.
