Education – An Agenda for Action Series
Education
Rather than filling brains with knowledge, the purpose of our education system should be to support the awakening and actualization of children’s true being. It should help them to grow as authentic human beings—in all their dimensions: physical, emotional, aesthetic, moral, intellectual, and spiritual. While it is traditionally feared that the focus on individual characters and personal skills could supplant the time needed to learn content, studies show that, on the contrary, these approaches can generate benefits in terms of well-being and character, while improving academic achievement. Improving children’s personal capacities just helps them learn better.
Redesigning educational systems to support “being” would better prepare pupils to succeed in the XXIst century. In fact, knowledge is now widely accessible online for free, and work is rapidly evolving, including with the development of artificial intelligence that redefines the kind of added-value humans can have. In the twenty-first century, lasting professional success will increasingly rely on personal skills, maybe the only ones that will accompany people all their lives. These skills will help us navigate complex and changing environments, work effectively in teams, contribute positively to our communities, and address the many life challenges we face.
